Is ADHD Compromising Your Quality Of Life?
Do you, your child, or your partner struggle with a lack of focus or inability to complete everyday tasks?
Is there an ADHD diagnosis present, or do you suspect that challenging symptoms align with ADHD?
Are you looking for support in navigating your experience?
Whether you’re impacted by Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder yourself or your loved one’s symptoms interfere with daily life, ADHD can add stress to an already demanding lifestyle. Inattention, impulsivity, and restlessness can make it nearly impossible to focus, while poor time management and school- or work-related struggles can significantly impact self-esteem. Not to mention, if you or your loved one are already living with anxiety, depression, or a neurodivergent diagnosis, ADHD may be exacerbating burdensome mental health symptoms.
At Sweet Spot Family Counselling, we recognize that those living with ADHD aren’t incompetent or “lazy”—your brain just works differently, and you need personalized accommodations to help you thrive. Through therapy at our practice, you can receive individualized support that will allow you to figure out how to manage ADHD, regardless of how it impacts your life.
ADHD Impacts Individuals Of All Ages And Their Loved Ones
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition that affects children, teens, and adults. Though the exact cause is unknown, research suggests that symptoms of ADHD are triggered by a combination of genetic, developmental, and environmental factors.
Despite the fact that ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders—affecting nearly 1 out of every 20 Canadians—there are a lot of misconceptions about the diagnosis. For example, ADHD is more frequently diagnosed among boys than girls, even though the rate of occurrence is equal between the genders. As a result, many young women have their symptoms overlooked, which can lead to problems with focus and attention in adulthood.
Furthermore, beyond the struggles that individuals with ADHD face, symptoms often cast a ripple effect on every area of their lives, from the completion of daily tasks to the maintenance of essential relationships. Oftentimes, parents and partners of those with ADHD require additional support in understanding their loved one’s unique brain and finding a middle ground for setting and managing expectations.
Our therapists are trained in ADHD and are here to guide you in navigating symptoms. Working together, we can help you figure out how to show up authentically as yourself while also enhancing your executive functioning skills.
Therapy Through Sweet Spot Family Counselling Can Help You Overcome ADHD-Related Challenges And Thrive
Our therapy services are available to individual children, teens, and adults living with ADHD—as well as the people who live with and support them. Customizing the counselling process to your unique needs, we will provide you with simple, clear strategies to make ADHD symptoms more manageable in your life.
Keep in mind we do not provide psychological evaluations to confirm an ADHD diagnosis, nor do we prescribe medication. For those services, we recommend that you consult your family doctor.
What To Expect
Therapy offers those living with ADHD a chance to let down their guard, become vulnerable, and explore new ways of living authentically despite challenging symptoms. Throughout the counselling process, psychoeducation will be provided to normalize the ADHD experience.
Your therapist will also consider both short- and long-term goals in creating meaningful, tailored solutions to help symptoms become more manageable. For children, in particular, your Sweet Spot Family Counselling therapist may collaborate with parents and school officials to create accommodations that can help reduce the negative impact of ADHD within the educational environment.
We use a strengths-based, holistic approach in therapy for ADHD, honoring the relationship between mind and body. Cognitive-based therapies may be incorporated to promote emotion regulation and improve executive functioning. Elements of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) may be used to teach mindfulness, distress tolerance, and improve attention. And narrative approaches can be used to increase self-esteem.
From our perspective, our clients are always in the driver’s seat of counselling—our job is to guide and support you at a pace that feels comfortable. It is never too late to start therapy, even if you’ve lived with ADHD for a long time. With some self-compassion and newfound strategies, it’s possible to regain a sense of focus, attention, and control over how you think, feel, and behave.
Still Unsure If Counselling Will Help You Manage ADHD Symptoms?
I have/my child has tried to manage their ADHD symptoms without success—how will therapy be any different?
Most people who come to counselling have already tried very hard to reduce their symptoms, but ADHD can be really difficult to manage without professional treatment. Our therapists are here to offer perspective on your symptoms, which will allow you to understand your ADHD in a new, solution-oriented way.
We are committed to meeting you wherever you are on your ADHD journey and supporting you in a way that promotes healing. And we are confident that you’ll see how much of a difference it can make simply to have someone on your side who is focused on you.
Everyone else in my life already thinks so poorly of me due to my symptoms; I’m worried you’ll judge me too.
Fear and shame are a big part of what keeps people feeling “stuck,” and we often see these feelings in people who have been judged harshly their whole lives for having ADHD. We treat all of our clients with compassion and empathy, and our therapists are specially trained in ADHD, ensuring that we take a culturally competent approach to treatment.
How will I know that my therapist is the right fit?
In order for you to feel seen and supported in therapy, it’s important for your therapist to understand the unique symptoms and experiences that come with ADHD. Our therapists are specifically trained in issues of neurodevelopmental disorders, and some of our team members live with ADHD themselves or have children/partners who have been diagnosed. We are committed to bringing a genuine, lived perspective to the counselling space and ensuring that you are matched with a therapist who can meet your needs.
